How to play 2048

2048 is a compact planning puzzle about space, order and controlled growth. Slide every tile at once, combine equal values and protect a route for new tiles before the four-by-four board fills.

The objective

Join two tiles with the same number to create the next power of two. Reaching 2048 completes the main goal, but the board can continue for a higher score. A move only counts when at least one tile changes position or merges.

A reliable approach

Keep your largest tile in one corner and build descending values beside it. Avoid random direction changes: each move should preserve an empty lane or prepare a merge. The built-in undo is useful for learning why a promising board collapsed.

This edition

Your current board and best score are saved locally when storage is available. Keyboard arrows, WASD, touch swipes and on-screen arrows all control the same rules, so the full puzzle works on phones and desktops without an account.
